Week Ahead: Straight Cashner

In Wednesday's Daily Dose, Ryan Boyer discusses Andrew Cashner's return, Ubaldo Jimenez's demotion and much much

The Padres have had high hopes for Andrew Cashner since they acquired him from the Cubs in return for young slugger Anthony Rizzo two years ago.

Now, it appears that the 27-year-old righty is beginning to fulfill his promise.

Coming off a season in which he went 10-9 with a 3.09 ERA in 175 innings, Cashner was tabbed as San Diego's Opening Day starter this year, performing well against the Dodgers with six innings of one-run ball. Cashner has backed that up with three straight quality starts, including a complete game shutout against the Tigers.

Overall, he sits with a 1.27 ERA and 0.95 WHIP through four turns and is averaging more than seven innings per start.

He goes twice next week, but he'll be tested with both outings coming away from Petco Park and against good teams. As well as he's pitching, I still like him as a strong play.

A few other notes on two-start options:

* The young and talented Wily Peralta is owned in only 20 percent of Yahoo! leagues despite a 2-0 record and 1.96 ERA through his first three starts. He's slated for two home starts in the upcoming week, against the Padres and Cubs. Pick him up and plug him in.

* Fantasy owners may be reluctant to touch Jorge De La Rosa (0-3, 7.58 ERA) but a deeper look reveals a solid 20/8 K/BB ratio and he was of course very solid last year. I like his chances to get on track with starts against the Giants and Dodgers.

* Jenrry Mejia is currently scheduled to start twice at home, and we like his upside if he does (18 strikeouts in 16 innings so far) but a blister could push him back. Keep an eye on his status.

Streamer City

The following pitchers are generally available in over 50 percent of fantasy leagues and have favorable match-ups this week:

American League

Thursday, 4/24: Corey Kluber vs. KC
Kluber's outstanding 18/3 K/BB ratio through two starts belies an ugly 5.40 ERA. He should be able to get his results in line against a struggling Royals lineup.

Friday, 4/25: Jesse Chavez @ HOU
He's off to a phenomenal start (1.35 ERA, 9.9 K/9 through three starts) but remains unowned in half of all Yahoo! leagues. No-brainer here.

National League

Wednesday, 4/23: Alfredo Simon @ PIT
The initial results in Simon's return to the rotation have been very good, as he's put up a 1.20 ERA in his first two starts.

Wednesday, 4/23: Nathan Eovaldi @ ATL
With a phenomenal 19/1 K/BB ratio through three starts, Eovaldi is recommended even in this tough match-up at Atlanta.

Friday, 4/25: Henderson Alvarez @ NYM
The righty hasn't looked great in his first three starts, but should be able to pull it together against one of the NL's worst offenses. The Mets are hitting just .229 as a team.
