Wayne Gretzky's reaction to winning All-Star Game challenge was priceless (Video)

LOS ANGELES – The Pacific Division thought they had doubled their lead and had one hand on the $1 million check for the 2017 NHL All-Star Game winner, but Wayne Gretzky had other ideas.

In a first for an NHL All-Star Game, Gretzky, who was subbing in as Metropolitan Division head coach for John Tortorella, called for a coach’s challenge, believing that Connor McDavid was offside during the zone entry leading to Ryan Kesler’s goal.

Gretzky was right in his belief, and after a review officials called the goal back, which kept the score 3-2 in the Pacific Division’s favor.

Not long after the Metro got a lifeline in the 3-on-3 final Cam Atkinson scored to tie the game. Five seconds later, Taylor Hall won the ensuing face-off and set up a chance with eventual MVP Wayne Simmonds, who put home the winner.

It was a pretty solid weekend for Gretzky. He returned to Los Angeles, was named as one of the NHL’s 100 Greatest Players and went out and guided the Metro Division to an All-Star Game conquest. Hopefully he gets a cut of that $1 million prize.

“That was the play. That was the game changer. That was the decision,” said Simmonds afterward. “Obviously he’s got a great hockey mind. He pulls that card, it’s offside, and come back, we score two goals and we win the game, so obviously it was a great decision.”
