Even if Christian Pulisic moves on from Germany (Liverpool looks to be the favorite for the Borussia Dortmund teenager’s services), United States men’s national team fans will have plenty of reasons to tune in to the Bundesliga every weekend. It’ll still be worthwhile checking on Fabian Johnson at Borussia Moenchengladbach, center back John Brooks at Hertha Berlin, the rebirth of Julian Green at Bayern Munich and injury comebacks of strikers Aron Johannsson at Werder Bremen and Terrence Boyd at newly promoted Leipzig.

Watching Bobby Wood score for Hamburg will be must-see viewing, too.

Wood, one of the breakout stars of the USMNT’s Copa America Centenario, debuted for his new club on Saturday, and the 23-year-old responded by scoring his first Bundesliga goal in Hamburg’s 1-1 season-opening draw with Ingolstadt.

Wood scored in the 30th minute with the type of speed and power that made him a complete nuisance for opposing defenses in the Copa America.

With World Cup qualifying resuming next week, Wood’s form was already going to be crucial for U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann. But now that Clint Dempsey’s career is on hold due to an irregular heartbeat, Wood figures to take on a more prominent role for Friday’s trip to St. Vincent and the Grenadines and the Sept. 6 home game against Trinidad and Tobago in Jacksonville, Fla.

The 17-year-old Pulisic represents the hope and future of the USMNT. But Wood is the here and now. And if Saturday is any indication, this could be the season Wood cements his place as America’s main man up top.
