Washington LB Azeem Victor's season is over with leg injury

Washington has lost another top defensive player for the rest of the season.

Huskies coach Chris Petersen told reporters Monday that linebacker Azeem Victor had surgery Sunday on a fractured right leg. He was carted off the field during the second quarter of UW’s loss to USC on Saturday night.

Victor, a junior, is the team’s leading tackler with 68 total tackles. He also has three tackles for loss.

Per The Seattle Times, Petersen indicated that Victor’s injury won’t require a “real long-term” recovery, but “made it sound unlikely” Victor could return for a bowl game. Additionally, the Times is reporting Victor plans to return for his senior season instead of declaring early for the NFL Draft.

From the Times:

The injury was not as severe as initially suspected, and Petersen said it’s not “a real long-term” recovery, but he made it sound unlikely that Victor would be able to return for a bowl game.

Victor, however, does intend to return to UW for his senior season in 2017, a source close to Victor told The Times. He is projected as a potential second- or third-round NFL draft pick.

This is the second week in a row the Huskies have ruled out a standout defensive player. Last Monday, Petersen announced Joe Mathis, the team’s top pass-rusher, would miss the rest of the season with a foot injury.

After making its debut in the College Football Playoff rankings at No. 4, Washington dropped its first game of the season to the Trojans to drop to 9-1 on the season. The Huskies will get back at it at home this weekend against Arizona State before rounding out the season for the Apple Cup against rival Washington State in Pullman.
