Teenage boy, 17, fighting for life after being shot in east London in violent start to new year

A teenage boy is fighting for his life in hospital after he was shot in east London just days before the start of the new year.

Police say two victims, aged 17 and 18, were rushed to hospital after being gunned down in a street in Walthamstow on Sunday night.

Armed police were deployed but there have been no arrests.

The 17-year-old, who was also stabbed, remains in a "critical" condition, while the 18-year-old is "stable" and his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Violence was also seen elsewhere in the capital – three teenagers were injured in a triple stabbing at a new year house party in West Norwood.

Meanwhile, a 29-year-old male is recovering after he was stabbed in Ealing during a daylight attack on New Year’s Day.

Other parts of the country have also suffered a violent start to 2020.

In the Wirral, a 52-year-old man was killed after he was stabbed in New Brighton, while in Derbyshire a double murder investigation is underway after a man and woman were found dead in a house on New in Duffield.

Detectives from the Met's Trident anti-gang unit are investigating the Walthamstow shooting and are appealing for witnesses.

A Scotland Yard spokeswoman said: "Police were called at 10.36 pm on Sunday to reports of a male suffering from a gunshot injury on St James Street in Walthamstow.

"Officers, including firearms officers, attended. An 18-year-old man was taken by the London Ambulance Service to an east London hospital. He remains in a stable condition and his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

"A second male, believed to be aged 17, was found nearby suffering from stab wounds and a gunshot injury. He was also taken to an east London hospital; he remains in a critical condition.

"At this early stage, it is believed that both victims were attacked in the street. Crime scenes remain in place."

She added: Trident detectives from Specialist Crime have been informed.

"There have been no arrests and enquiries continue. Anyone with information is asked to call police."
