Virginia unveiled new football uniforms Saturday to kick off the first season under Bronco Mendenhall.

The Cavaliers will wear a blue jersey with white pants at home and an all-white combination on the road. Additionally, UVA has an alternate orange jersey available for home games to go with its usual white pants.

Mendenhall, who came to UVA after 11 seasons at BYU, explained the changes in a video released by the program.

“I love the idea of a football team and football program representing an institution through how they play, but also how they look,” Mendenhall said in a release. “What we wear I hope connects eras, but also the community to the eras where we can acknowledge the past but also look forward to a really, really bright future.”

As Mendenhall detailed in the video, the Cavs will have their jersey number on the left side of their helmet with the usual Virginia saber logo on the right side. A third stripe and grey facemask will also be added to the three different (white, blue and orange) helmets.

“Numbers here are earned, not given,” Mendenhall said in the video. “Once they earn them and once they choose them, those numbers will be near and dear to their hearts. The number placement is on the left side because it’s closest to their heart. Each one of those numbers has special significance in why they chose it and that usually will captivate them to play more purposively. On the right side is the V crossed sabres, which I’ve taken to mean and which I’ve embraced as uncompromised excellence. That just means there are no shortcuts.”

The style of the blue home jerseys, Mendenhall said, is “honoring the past” while the orange jerseys coincide with the school’s “Paint the Town Orange” pep rally, which takes place Friday before the first game.
