Virginia Tech adds Grant Wells, Jason Brown as QB transfers

Virginia Tech upgraded its quarterback room with two transfers on Thursday.

Both Grant Wells and Jason Brown announced Thursday they will continue their college careers with the Hokies. Wells started the last two seasons at Marshall and will have three years of eligibility remaining at Virginia Tech.

Brown started his career at St. Francis (Pa.) and then spent the 2021 season at South Carolina. He has one more season of eligibility remaining.

Wells arrived at Marshall in 2019 and took a redshirt before taking over the starting role in 2020 and 2021. Over those two seasons, Wells threw for 5,623 yards, 34 touchdowns and 22 interceptions while completing 64.3% of his passes. He also rushed for 231 yards and nine scores during his time with the Thundering Herd.

Brown started four games for South Carolina in 2021, including leading the Gamecocks to wins over Florida and Auburn. A Virginia native, Brown threw for 721 yards, eight touchdowns and six interceptions and completed 55.6% of his throws during his lone season at the FBS level.

Before that, Brown spent several years at St. Francis, an FCS program in Pennsylvania. He saw the field sparingly early in his career and his 2020 season was canceled because of the pandemic. In 2019, Brown threw for 3,084 yards and 28 touchdowns.

Virginia Tech, which is entering its first season under new head coach Brent Pry, saw its top two quarterbacks — Braxton Burmeister and Knox Kadum — decide to transfer after the season. That left just two scholarship quarterbacks on the roster: senior Connor Blumrick and freshman Tahj Bullock. Virginia Tech also signed three-star QB Devin Farrell in its 2022 recruiting class.

The Hokies went 6-7 in 2021.
