There were emotional scenes last night when Italian assistant referee Alessandro Giallatini was left in tears, consoled by RB Leipzig coach Marco Rose.

It was the final match of his career for Giallatini, who had 41 games in the most prestigious competition in club football.

When the final whistle was blown on his Champions League career in Aston Villa’s 3-2 victory over RB Leipzig, the emotion of the moment got to 49-year-old Giallatini.

Rose spotted it and went over to console him, soon joined by more players.

The highlight of the official’s career was being part of the team for the 2020 Champions League Final between Bayern Munich and Paris Saint-Germain, working with Daniele Orsato.

His love for the sport was also very moving for Portugal coach Roberto Martinez, who was a pundit on the Amazon Prime Sport coverage.
