Utah HC Crushes Calgary To Close October
Andre Tourigny felt the relief pour out of the sold-out Delta Center faithful after his club took a month of frustration out on the Calgary Flames.
He was just wondering why they couldn't feel this way more often.
Whatever the reason, it was Utah HC who finally heard the roar of the crowd return to their side after a nearly month-long slump in a 5-1 rout Wednesday night at Delta Center.
It was a well-deserved win indeed that pushed Utah (5-4-2) back above .500 to close October, with 12 points in the bag and sitting in the second wild-card spot in the Western Conference.
More importantly, it snapped a season-long four-game losing streak and handed the club their first regulation win -- both at home -- since opening night against Chicago.
"We were exactly where we should be mentally," Tourigny said. "We weren't frustrated, we weren't emotional. We were determined to do a job."
And that determination carried over all the way to the final buzzer in a game where Utah controlled the play from the first puck drop, a far cry from Monday's epic meltdown against San Jose.
Alex Kerfoot opened the scoring just 4:41 into the game to set the tone, while rookie Maveric Lamoureux delivered the decisive counter-punch midway into the second period with his first NHL goal.
Lamoureux took a set-up pass from down low and blasted a rocket past a screened Dustin Wolf after the Flames (5-4-1) made it 2-1 just 17 seconds earlier on Anthony Mantha's goal.
Mikhail Sergachev then iced the win with a snap shot goal on a 5-on-3, completing his first multi-point game (one goal, two assists) as a Utah HC player.
It makes sense, then, the standing ovation Utah received at the final horn was not the only one -- for the first time since opening night, the Delta Center faithful was behind them at every step.
It once again, like Tourigny said, makes you wonder why it hasn't happened more often -- yet.
"We're missing that; it was awesome to hear the crowd cheering us," he added. "That's what we want to do every night; we want to make these fans proud."
