Novak Djokovic out after accidentally hitting line judge

Novak Djokovic’s run is over, but not because he lost his match on Sunday.

Djokovic defaulted from the US Open after he accidentally hit a line judge in the neck when he hit the ball back off his racket in the opening set of his match with Pablo Carreno Busta.

Djokovic immediately realized what he had done and approached the line judge, clearly concerned for her safety. As players who hit another person on the court are automatically disqualified from the competition, Djokovic is headed home.

Naomi Osaka cruises into quarterfinals

Naomi Osaka had little trouble getting past Estonia’s Anett Kontaveit late on Sunday night.

Osaka beat Kontaveit in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, earning her place in the quarterfinals for the first time since 2018. Osaka bested Kontaveit at the Western & Southern Open less than two weeks ago, too, though she had to rally back after dropping the first set in that match in Ohio.

Osaka made another statement with her mask on the court, too, this time honoring Trayvon Martin — a 17-year-old Black boy who was shot and killed by a man in Florida in 2012.

It’s the fourth mask she’s worn so far this tournament, following Amhaud Arbery, Elijah McClain and Breonna Taylor.

Brady extends sets streak

American Jennifer Brady rode her sets win streak into the US Open quarterfinals on Sunday. She knocked off Angelique Kerber 6-1, 6-4 in the day’s opening match to reach her first Grand Slam quarterfinal.

Brady, 25, has yet to drop a set in the tournament and has lost only 19 games in the four matches she’s played. The 1-hour, 28-minute match was her longest of the tournament and included a medical timeout to get her left upper leg wrapped.

She also became the first women’s college player to reach the US Open quarterfinals since Gigi Fernandez in 1994, per the USTA. Brady attended UCLA and helped the program to the 2014 national championship. She won the Pac-12 singles title as a freshman and left after her sophomore year in 2015.

Brady, seeded 28th, will play the winner of Yulia Putintseva versus Petra Martic.

Denis Shapovalov first Canadian man to reach quarterfinals

Denis Shapovalov made history on Sunday at the US Open.

Shapovalov — after beating Belgium’s David Goffin 6-7 (0), 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 — became the first Canadian man to reach the quarterfinals at the US Open.

The 21-year-old pulled off the upset against the No. 7 seed after dropping the opening game, rallying back with three straight wins. Canadian men had gone 0-12 in the round of 16 before Shapovalov finally broke the streak.

He’ll take on Busta in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
