Ohio State coach Urban Meyer had a great reaction when he learned Alabama used former players like Trent Richardson on its scout team this season.

He wasn’t upset about it (like another coach was), just surprised. And it clearly got his mind wandering.

“I had no idea you could do that … It’s got me thinking.”

In the lead up to Alabama’s game against LSU, the Tide brought in former No. 3 overall pick Trent Richardson to simulate LSU star running back Leonard Fournette. Another former letterman, three-year starting quarterback John Parker Wilson, played the role of Tigers QB Danny Etling. Tide coach Nick Saban also used another quarterback, Blake Sims, earlier this year on the scout team after Blake Barnett transferred.

If you were wondering, the practice is totally legal. NCAA bylaw 14.2.1.6 reads:

A former student at the certifying institution (e.g., former student-athlete) may participate in an organized practice session on an occasional basis, provided the institution does not publicize the participation of the former student at any time before the practice session.

Football is a copycat sport, so it wouldn’t be a surprise at all to see other schools start doing the same. Meyer even whipped out his phone and pretended he was going to make a call while at the podium.

Pretty funny. Maybe we’ll see Troy Smith in full pads in Columbus before the season ends.
