The University of Miami and sponsor Adidas unveiled the school’s season opener football uniforms Monday, and they’re the first ever to be made from “repurposed and upcycled” plastic marine waste.

The eco-friendly uniforms were created in partnership with Parley for The Oceans, an organization that raises awareness for ocean protection and takes part in projects to help prevent destruction. Adidas has previously worked with the organization on its line of Parley sneakers.

Named the “Miami x Parley A1” uniform, the look will feature the school’s classic home orange jerseys, with green sleeve caps and white pants with a wave print. They will debut Sept. 2 as the Hurricanes take on LSU at the 2018 AdvoCare Classic at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

There are also subtle palm trees on the sides of the jersey as an homage to South Florida’s landscaping. The white block letters and numbers have an organic-looking green stitching throughout.

More than 70 percent of the uniform is made with “regenerated” Econyl yarn, which is made from fishing nets and other nylon waste intercepted in marine environments. The material is conducive to creating the durable – yet breathable – fabric necessary for football uniforms.

“Our players and staff are excited to wear the new adidas Parley jerseys and gear for our season opener. We’re also excited that adidas and Parley are teaming up with UM to help promote sustainability around the world,” University of Miami head football coach Mark Richt said in the school’s press release. “Community service has always been an integral part of our football program, and this partnership with adidas and Parley helps us continue those efforts.”

In addition to the eco-friendly uniform, players will have their choice of wearing either adizero 7.0 cleats or Freak x Parley cleats and gloves, also made from recycled materials.

The collaboration will also benefit the Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, as the Miami x Parley A1 uniforms will be auctioned off with the proceeds going to a fund for educational research.
