North Carolina led just one time during Saturday’s game against Pittsburgh — as the final seconds ticked off the clock.

Quarterback Mitch Trubisky hit Bug Howard for a two-yard touchdown to take a 37-36 lead with two seconds to play and give the Tar Heels a hard-fought leg up in the ACC Coastal Division.

During the final drive, Trubisky converted three fourth-and-longs as the Tar Heels rallied from as much as 13 down in the fourth quarter.

Pitt jumped out to a 12-0 lead and fought off a late second-quarter surge by North Carolina to take a 19-16 lead into halftime. After scoring two touchdowns on its first two second-half possessions, Pitt hit a field goal early in the fourth quarter that seemed to all but seal the game.

While Trubisky was playing lights out — he completed 35-of-46 passes for 453 yards and five touchdowns — the North Carolina running game was non-existent. Elijah Hood, T.J. Logan and Trubisky combined for 22 carries for a measly 18 yards.

However, the Tar Heels didn’t seem to need the rushing attack as Trubisky found Howard in the end zone with 5:24 remaining to climb within six points, and then he found Howard again on the final score of the game.

North Carolina is just the fifth team in the past decade to score at least 37 points and win while rushing for fewer than 20 yards.

The win vaults North Carolina to the top of what should be a highly competitive ACC Coastal Division. Pittsburgh figured to be in that mix, but this loss means it might have to be perfect in division play moving forward.
