Coronavirus cases are falling in nearly all of London’s boroughs, official figures show, in a boost for the decision to put the capital into Tier 2 when lockdown ends.

The data shows cases dropped in 30 boroughs, with 22 areas seeing a decline of at least a fifth in the week to November 24, compared to the previous seven days.

It came as Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford announced that pubs, restaurants and cafes in the country would be banned from selling alcohol from Friday, in a bid to bring down rising coronavirus infections. Hospitality businesses will have to close at 6pm except for takeaway.

In England, Environment Secretary George Eustice admitted up to 100 Conservatives are unhappy about the new tier system.

Boris Johnson is facing a backbench rebellion over plans to push the measures through the Commons during a crunch vote on Tuesday.
