Here’s something I learned recently: Americans throw out more food than any other country. In fact, we waste nearly 30% to 40% of the entire U.S. food supply. While there are a lot of ways food gets wasted, the most surprising may be that “ugly produce” never even reaches the grocery store.

Ugly produce refers to food that has blemishes, is oddly shaped or is too big to fit into conventional packaging. There’s nothing else wrong with it; it just doesn’t look how we picture our food. Now, Misfits Market is doing something about it.

The online grocery store “rescues” ugly organic produce and other food items that get discarded for various reasons, like excess inventory, packaging changes, or it’s close to the sell-by date. In turn, Misfits Market sells these products to customers for up to 40% less than traditional grocery stores charge. All in all, it’s more sustainable, and people can save money on food.

Here’s how it works: Misfits Market uses a subscription model. You sign up for free, choose a plan and share your food preferences. (Plans start at $35 per week.) Then, you can customize your order each week and shop from over 500 products, including produce, meat, seafood, dairy and bakery items. If you prefer, you can also allow Misfits Market to create a custom box for you. Then, your groceries arrive on your selected delivery day.

If you don’t need a weekly delivery, it’s easy to skip a week or change your delivery day. The point is not to waste food, so don’t order one if you don’t think you’ll eat it.

Misfits Market claims you can save up to $1,300 every year on grocery items when you subscribe. That’s a big difference — and you don’t even have to drive to the grocery store and shop yourself.

Of course, once you get your Misfits Market box, you must try to eat all the food. According to Feeding America, about 39% of all food waste in the U.S. comes from our own homes — that’s about 42 billion pounds of food waste. It shouldn’t be too hard to do, though.
