UFC Lightweight ‘Hands of Stone’ Sam Stout Announces Retirement

After a 12 years of fighting professionally and 20 fights inside the famed UFC Octagon, Sam Stout (20-12-1) announced his retirement on Wednesday. The news was first reported on Fox Sports 1’s UFC Tonight.

In a statement provided to the network, the 31-year-old cited a diminished ability to compete at the highest level of the sport as his reason for hanging up his gloves.

“It has become clear to me that I am no longer able to compete at the highest level of mixed martial arts,” he said. “Competing as a UFC fighter for the last 10 years has been something I will always look back on with great pride. I think my best days as a fighter are behind me and it would be a risk to my legacy and my health to continue competing. Therefore, I would like to announce my retirement from the sport of mixed martial arts.”

During his career, Stout earned Fight of the Night honors six times and received one Knockout of the Night bonus. He holds wins over veteran fighters Joe Lauzon, Yves Edwards, Spencer Fisher and Yves Jabouin.

Stout made his professional fighting debut in 2003. After putting together an eight-fight winning streak the Canadian was signed by the UFC. Twenty fights later, amassing a 9-11 record with the organization, Stout’s career comes to an end.
