UEFA Super Cup Preview: Why Manchester United can topple Real Madrid

The European Domestic season formally raises its curtain on Tuesday, as reigning continental champions Real Madrid face Europa League holders Manchester United in the UEFA Super Cup.

The game, which for many years was a staple in the plush locale of Monaco’s Stade Louis II stadium, will be held at Macedonia’s slightly-less-plush Phillip II Arena. If the occasion between these two European giants wasn’t heated enough, temperatures are expected to exceed one hundred degrees on Skopje on Tuesday.

Real Madrid are the UEFA Super Cup holders and favorites for this edition. Cristiano Ronaldo—who missed Los Blancos’ summer tour by virtue of a Chinese promotional tour and an extended vacation—is available for selection, plus Gareth Bale should be on his way back to full health.

With a win, Los Blancos would become the first back-to-back UEFA Super Cup holders since AC Milan in 1989 and 1990, and it would mean Spanish sides have won the completion in eight of the last nine editions (Bayern Munich bucked the trend in 2013).

However, FC Yahoo’s Ryan Bailey believes Manchester United could cause an upset with Jose Mourinho’s first ever win against his former employer.
