Yahoo Sports High School prom chaperones arrested for public intoxication
Recent alcohol-related arrests at a high school prom came with a surprising twist: It was the chaperones, not the students, who were allegedly drunk at the event.
The two adults were school employees — a teacher and a tech specialist — at Washington & Lee High School in Montross, VA, and were arrested for public intoxication last month during the prom, according to WTRV.
Sheriff C. O. Balderson of the Westmorland County Sheriff department confirmed to the outlet that multiple witnesses, including the responding deputies, saw the pair acting drunk at the prom, and that the employees refused to take a breathalyzer test at the scene.
The deputies brought the pair to the magistrate's office, where only one of the two adults, history teacher Jacob Inge, was charged.
Sheronda Peyton, who works with students at the school during the summer, spoke to WTVR about the incident.
"To do something like be intoxicated around them is going to cause them to lose respect," she said.
Westmoreland County Schools and the Westmoore Land County Sheriff's Office did not immediately respond to Yahoo Lifestyle's requests for comment.
This is not the first story of the season involving a teacher being intoxicated at prom. Earlier this month, a teacher in Rabun County, Georgia was also reportedly arrested for being drunk at his school's prom, and, according to FOX4, scored a .124 on a breathalyzer test, which is well over the legal driving limit of .08.
