Two men arrested over murder of journalist Lyra McKee in Northern Ireland

Another two men have been arrested over the murder of journalist Lyra McKee, police in Northern Ireland have said.

The men, aged 24 and 29, were detained in Londonderry on Wednesday morning under the Terrorism Act.

Ms McKee, 29, was shot dead by dissident republicans on 18 April 2019 in Derry as she observed rioting in the Creggan area of the city.

She was standing near a police vehicle when she was hit by a bullet fired by a masked gunman toward officers.

Three men have already been charged with the murder while another two men have been charged with rioting and associated offences.

The attack was previously claimed by the so-called New IRA, which said Ms McKee was caught in the line of fire while standing with what the extremist group called "the enemy".

In a statement on Wednesday, Police Service Northern Ireland (PSNI) said: "The men, aged 24 and 29, were arrested in the Derry/Londonderry area this morning under the Terrorism Act and have been taken to the Serious Crime Suite at Musgrave Police Station where they will be interviewed later."

It comes after four people were arrested over the journalist's murder last week.

PSNI said officers detained four men, aged 19, 20, 21, and 33, in the Derry area on 15 September under the Terrorism Act.

Two men were also granted bail on Friday after appearing in court charged with murdering Ms McKee.

Gearoid Cavanagh, 33, and Jordan Devine, 21, both from Derry, appeared via videolink at Londonderry Magistrates' Court.
