Troy rides defense to Dollar General Bowl victory

Troy edged out Ohio in a tight, sloppy game.

It was not pretty, but Troy ended the season with double-digit victories after defeating Ohio 28-23.

Although running back Jordan Chunn scored three rushing touchdowns for Troy, the MVP of the game went to the Trojan defense. Santa came early for Troy as Ohio quarterback Greg Windham gifted the Trojan defense five turnovers (four INTs and one fumble) in the contest. Troy’s offense exchanged the turnovers for 21 points.

Troy quarterback Brandon Silvers tossed two interceptions in the game, and Ohio converted one of his mistakes into a 99-yard touchdown drive in the first quarter. Alas, Ohio tried to stick to its usual script of keeping the game close, but the Bobcats could not overcome their minus-5 turnover margin for the game.

The embodiment of Ohio’s night came in the third quarter when Windham had a tipped pass outside his own end zone land in the hands of Troy defensive lineman Trevon Sanders.

After this glorious big man interception, Chunn pounded in his third touchdown of the night for Troy to increase its lead to 28-17.

Even with the four interceptions, the Bobcats had success through the air as wide receiver Jordan Reid finished the night with 12 catches for 162 yards and a score. Ohio drove down the field several times in the second half, but could only manage two field goals.

Head coach Neal Brown and Troy earned their 10th win tonight after winning only four games in 2015. Ohio drops to 8-6.
