Trees slashed. Fire at sports complex. East Pierce County city sees vandalism spree

The city of Sumner reminded residents to alert authorities if they witness something suspicious after trees, flower pots and an outhouse were attacked Monday.

“Yesterday, the trees were attacked at Seibenthaler Park, flower pots were smashed downtown & the Sports Complex outhouse was lit on fire. If you see something in progress, call 911. If you know something or need to report after the fact, report online,” a post on the city’s Twitter account said Tuesday morning.

The city’s post did not provide additional details about the outhouse fire.

When asked about the attacks, city spokesperson Carmen Palmer said: “All I know is that the outhouse at the Bill Heath Sports Complex was burned yesterday ... The best way for public places like parks to be safer is if they’re used properly by more people.”

Palmer said residents can give suggestions and feedback about the city’s parks, trails and open space at connects.sumnerwa.gov/parks-and-trails-plan-update.
