Transfer news LIVE: Man Utd end Marko Arnautovic interest as Timo Werner confirms Chelsea exit

The new Premier League season is underway but the transfer window looks to be the main attraction for many with Manchester United likely to dominate the headlines over the last few weeks after their loss to Brighton leaving Erik ten Hag desperate for reinforcements. Realistic targets include Adrien Rabiot and Marko Arnautovic, while Guido Rodriguez, Sergej Milinkovic-Savic and Cody Gakpo continue to be linked with moves to Old Trafford.

Then there is the saga surrounding Frenkie de Jong and his future at the Camp Nou, which rumbles on, and Manchester United and Chelsea remain strongly linked to the Barcelona midfielder. The Spaniards want to bring in Bernardo Silva as a replacement for him if a deal is arranged with Man City, while Marcos Alonso could move from Stamford Bridge to Catalunya.

Elsewhere, Thomas Tuchel has hinted at the need for more players despite a win at Everton, with Wesley Fofana linked to the Blues. Fofana’s exit could provide Leicester with ammunition to sign players, as the only club in Europe’s top five leagues without one incoming player, the Foxes have already lost goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel and midfielder James Maddison is wanted by Newcastle, meaning Brendan Rodgers could be busy after watching his side cough up a 2-0 lead against Brentford to open up the season. Manchester United need to get over Sir Alex Ferguson exit, Javier Hernandez claims

08:20 , Jack Rathborn

Javier Hernandez believes former club Manchester United need to adapt and finally get over Sir Alex Ferguson’s exit if they are to get back to the top.

The Scot called time on his masterful, medal-laden managerial reign at Old Trafford in 2013, having won 13 league titles and two Champions Leagues among his impressive trophy haul.

Hernandez was part of Ferguson’s final Premier League title triumph and has watched from afar as United floundered for much of the nine years that have followed.

The LA Galaxy striker hates the way things have panned out for a club he retains so much affection for and believes the Old Trafford giants need to focus on what is to come rather than what they have lost.

Manchester United chase Sergej Milinkovic-Savic after Adrien Rabiot deal

Tuesday 9 August 2022 20:00 , Michael Jones

Juventus have reportedly agreed to sell Adrien Rabiot to Manchester United for an initial £15million. The Guardian says the discussions over personal terms for the 27-year-old France midfielder are still at an early stage with approval still needed from his agent and mother. The Red Devils are also said to be interested in Lazio’s Serbia midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, who they have been linked with for a number of years. But the Telegraph reports intermediaries believe a deal can actually be done for the 27-year-old.

Erling Haaland’s early impact at Manchester City already looks ominous for the Premier League

Tuesday 9 August 2022 19:15 , Michael Jones

While Erling Haaland was swearing on live television, and Pep Guardiola was getting a little passive aggressive, David Moyes was becoming defensive.

The West Ham manager had been speaking about how his side had been preparing for the Norwegian’s runs all week. They had watched his game against Liverpool, and tried to apply the lessons from previous games against Manchester City.

It didn’t matter, though. They could do little about it.

Moyes was a little unwilling to go all in on all the gushing praise for Haaland, though.

He first of all said that his team should have cut out the Kevin De Bruyne pass that led to the new signing’s sublime second goal. He then refused to admit that the main difference was Haaland.

Frenkie de Jong’s deferred wages explained: Why Barcelona stand-off is part of growing trend

Tuesday 9 August 2022 19:00 , Michael Jones

If the long and protracted Frenkie de Jong transfer saga has not already been messy enough, there is one way of making it a whole lot messier.

“De Jong should consider legal action v Barcelona and all players should be behind him,” Gary Neville tweeted last week. “A club spending fortunes on new players whilst not paying the ones they have under contract their full money is immoral and a breach. @FIFPRO should be all over bullying like this and stop it.”

Predictably, Neville’s tweet did not go down well among Barcelona’s support – with some even going as far as to pretend his infamous spell in charge of Valencia went even worse than it actually did – but you do not have to be a former Manchester United right-back to sympathise with the sentiment behind it.

For a financially-challenged club like Barça to push a player out so that they can fund a summer of extravagant spending is one thing. To do so while refusing to pay him wages that he is owed is another entirely.

Tuesday 9 August 2022 18:45 , Michael Jones

The 30-year-old England international was part of the Burnley side which collected all three points for the first time last season at the 10th attempt when they beat Brentford 3-1 at Turf Moor on 30 October, and was on the receiving end when the Magpies finally ended their drought with a 1-0 win over the Clarets on 4 December, their 15th game of the league campaign.

Brilliant Brighton show there will be plenty of life after Marc Cucurella and Yves Bissouma

Tuesday 9 August 2022 18:30 , Michael Jones

If there is a blueprint for winning at Old Trafford, it probably doesn’t involve selling your two best players. If the theory was that Brighton will emerge from the summer around £90million richer but poorer on the pitch without Yves Bissouma and Marc Cucurella, they conjured what – on paper, anyway – ranks as one of the best results in their history.

Although, perhaps, not even their finest against Manchester United since the start of May. A maiden win against Old Trafford was a second against United in swift succession; for 7 May, read 7 August. After a 4-0 victory at home, with the soon-to-be £90million pair, came a 2-1 victory away. United’s decline has to be factored into any evaluation but even February’s 2-0 defeat, when Brighton were the superior side for an hour, offered evidence that now they are a better team than United: not necessarily individually but definitely collectively.

Conor Coady the face of an era for Wolves but departure highlights Bruno Lage’s revolution

Tuesday 9 August 2022 14:28 , Michael Jones

The continuity candidate has become the unlikely revolutionary. Bruno Lage shaped up as the new Nuno Espirito Santo in his first season at Wolves: Portuguese and with marked connections to Jorge Mendes, overseeing a relatively low-scoring side who were hard to break down and who built on the solid foundations their back three provided.

He is starting his sophomore season by taking an axe to a rearguard who, for swathes of his debut campaign, had one of the best defensive records in Europe’s five major leagues.

The system is gone and its emblematic figure has followed: with Conor Coady an Everton player for the season, the greatest beneficiary of the back three and the biggest reason for playing it has been exiled.

Liverpool could strengthen midfield says Carragher

Tuesday 9 August 2022 14:07 , Michael Jones

Jamie Carragher believes that there could still be some movement in this transfer window from Liverpool who could be thinking about strengthening their midfield options.

“Most people would say Liverpool’s midfield could now be strengthened, not in terms of numbers but maybe in terms of quality and offering something different to what they have in midfield.” said Carragher, “It’s not having a go at the midfield players that they currently have, it’s just the age profile of some of the midfielder there, who are getting into their 30s.

“Liverpool’s first-choice midfield – and the one that played at Fulham – is getting towards the 30-age mark. You think a younger and more energetic player at some stage is needed, they’ve got those players there in reserve but they’re all injured.

“I would only want Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool to do that if they get the midfielder they want. Liverpool’s success in the transfer market has been down to not panicking, it’s not what they’ve done in the past, it’s not what they’re doing now and it can’t be what they do in the future. If there’s no midfielder they want out there, don’t get him. But if they feel there’s one who has those quality and is available, I would like them to do it of course. But don’t panic.”

Questions remain over Man Utd transfer policy

Tuesday 9 August 2022 13:20 , Michael Jones

The last few transfer windows have all followed a similar pattern for Manchester United.

Radamel Falcao, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Edinson Cavani, even Cristiano Ronaldo have all been brought to Old Trafford in the hope that they can turn around the club’s misfortunes.

None of these arrivals have worked - though Ronaldo is still there - and questions remain whether United even have a competent transfer strategy in mind on who to bring in.

Chelsea and Leicester £10m apart on Wesley Fofana valuation

Tuesday 9 August 2022 12:38 , Michael Jones

Chelsea are currently £10m short of Leicester City‘s valuation for Wesley Fofana, as the London club prepare another bid that could spark their busiest period of the window. The Stamford Bridge hierarchy are also working on deals for Frenkie de Jong and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

While Leicester’s public stance is that neither Fofana nor James Maddison are for sale, sources close to the situation insist the club’s financial circumstances - which has seen the Thai owners’ duty free-based business suffer through two years of the pandemic - means one will likely have to go, albeit at high prices.

The feeling within the market is that Fofana is gettable for £80m and Maddison for £60m. Newcastle United remain someway short of the latter price, and Leicester would be more keen to keep the playmaker.

Thomas Tuchel on the need for young defenders amid Chelsea’s Wesley Fofana chase

Monday 8 August 2022 19:00 , Jack Rathborn

“It is a lot of experience, it is maybe another of age, it is a lot of experience and they have their quality and they know what they are doing,” Tuchel said.

“We also need to make sure we have a new generation to take over in the next years but the guys are strong that is why they are under contract and the guys have our trust.

“There needs to be [balance]. I think it is necessary. The game in general is very physical and demands a lot. This is the situation. We knew it before.

“Azpi is the legend that he is, Thiago is in the moment still very important to us and when we had the chance to sign Kalidou we did it because we believe that he has some years ahead of him. But in general it is the fact that like the goalkeeper and the double sixes are in their thirties, and that is just what it is.

“Pace is an issue and speed is an issue. In all signings, this is the demand of the game that you can play one on ones, that you can defend space if needed with high-speed runs.”

Brilliant Brighton show transfer strategy works after Marc Cucurella and Yves Bissouma sales

Monday 8 August 2022 18:45 , Jack Rathborn

“It was a big difference with their routines,” noted the beaten Erik ten Hag. “They are a long time together with a certain philosophy and plan, cooperation between coach and team.” It was a triumph of cohesion, coaching and continuity. Graham Potter supplied the context: taking over a team fourth from bottom, requiring results to persuade the doubters. “The way you convince people in football is to win and when you are Brighton and Hove Albion it can take you time to win,” he said.

Fulham’s new faces and old give early optimism over survive and thrive Premier League plans

Monday 8 August 2022 18:30 , Jack Rathborn

At the interval on the opening weekend of the season, Fulham fans would have been riding high on optimism, not just for the 90 minutes but for the season and even beyond.

It wasn’t just that they were beating Liverpool, nor even that they were deservedly ahead. Nor was it solely about the usual (and warranted) over-excitement of a Premier League return, more impending transfer arrivals in the final week of the window or the prospect of clocking up about 8 per cent of the points required to stay up already, on day one.

The added surge of hope and belief would also have been in part due to the debut performance of Joao Palhinha, a summer signing from Sporting CP who had previously been linked with bigger, more established top-flight clubs. On the basis of how he handled Liverpool’s midfield in that opening period, maybe a few are already regretting their hesitation.

Leicester to keep faith in Danny Ward rather than turn to transfer market for new goalkeeper

Rodgers said Daniel Iversen would also be challenging for the role last week when Schmeichel ended his 11-year stay at the King Power Stadium before handing Ward the number one jersey for his side’s Premier League opener.

Frenkie de Jong’s deferred wages explained: Why Barcelona stand-off is part of growing trend

Monday 8 August 2022 17:30 , Jack Rathborn

On this day in 2011: Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain signs for Arsenal

Monday 8 August 2022 14:09 , Jack Rathborn

Arsenal completed the £15million signing of Southampton winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on this day in 2011.

Saints announced that Oxlade-Chamberlain had moved to the Emirates Stadium in a club-record sale. The Gunners paid £12million up front with a further £3m in add-ons.

Arsene Wenger hailed Oxlade-Chamberlain, 17, as a player of rich potential.

“We are delighted that Alex has decided to join us,” said Wenger. “He is an exciting young player who will provide us with creativity and offensive quality.

“Alex is a versatile player who can play in a number of positions. He can play as an attacking centre midfielder, or wide left and right.

“Alex is a perceptive passer of the ball and has a great understanding of the game and looks to be a very good team player.”

Oxlade-Chamberlain had yet to compete at a higher level than League One, but his signing was viewed as a coup for Arsenal, despite the size of the transfer fee.

Manchester United and Liverpool also expressed interest in the Southampton academy product, but the Gunners edged their rivals.

“Arsenal have a great manager in Arsene Wenger, top-quality players and an attractive style of play,” said Oxlade-Chamberlain.

“These were all important factors in me choosing to sign for Arsenal.”

Oxlade-Chamberlain played 198 games and scored 20 goals in his six seasons with the Gunners, winning the FA Cup three times before he signed for Liverpool in August 2017.

He won the Champions League with the Reds in 2019 and the Premier League the following season. He has also represented England on 35 occasions.

Villarreal eye Tottenham pair Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele

Monday 8 August 2022 13:43 , Jack Rathborn

Villarreal could make a double move for Tottenham pair Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele, according to Sky Sports.

Antonio Conte continues to revamp his squad and trimming some unwanted squad players could balance the books after a big summer of spending.

Ndombele went on loan to Lyon last season, while Lo Celso enjoyed a loan with the Yellow Submarines, with Unai Emery seeing enough to push for the Argentine’s return.

Chelsea eye younger defenders

Monday 8 August 2022 13:32 , Ben Burrows

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel was delighted with the performance of Thiago Silva, Cesar Azpilicueta and Kalidou Koulibaly on Saturday but with the back three having a combined age of 100 he knows the club must secure the next generation of defenders.

"We are so happy to have players such as Azpi, Thiago and Kalidou but it is also important that we have the next generation coming through to eventually take over from them in future years," he said.
