The 35-year-old joins for an undisclosed fee to become Town’s seventh summer arrival.

Chelsea took advantage of others’ inability to spend, turning to the bank of Roman. They activated Timo Werner’s release clause at RB Leipzig. It was a time when deploying Roman Abramovich’s funds seemed more of a legitimate ploy. And, as budgets were frozen amid uncertainty elsewhere, Chelsea stole a march on the European elite by snapping up the Bundesliga’s two most coveted young talents.

A seemingly Real Madrid-bound Kai Havertz was redirected to Stamford Bridge. Werner, who had long looked headed for Liverpool, joined his compatriot in London. Havertz has a Champions League final winner to show for a mixed time at Chelsea, along with the possibility potential will be realised. Werner has the medal but as he retreats to back to Leipzig, it is for around half his initial price. A £25 million transfer fee would amount to a similar loss for Chelsea. Coupled with the probability that they will end up writing off far more on Romelu Lukaku, after his reunion came in the form of a loan back to Inter Milan, and the last examples of Abramovich’s largesse have not had the desired benefits for Chelsea. Rather than inheriting a potent attack, perhaps Clearlake Capital bought problems.

Werner was the coup who wasn’t. In all competitions, he ended with 23 goals in 89 matches for Chelsea: underwhelming but not as bad as his Premier League return of 10 in 56. In terms of goal-per-game ratio, it was sub Andriy Shevchenko (nine in 48) and just below Fernando Torres (20 in 110). His last Bundesliga season left him second only to Robert Lewandowski for goals, with 28. Over two years in the Premier League, he was in a class of his own, albeit as an expected goals underachiever. Javier Hernandez believes former club Manchester United need to adapt and finally get over Sir Alex Ferguson’s exit if they are to get back to the top.

The Scot called time on his masterful, medal-laden managerial reign at Old Trafford in 2013, having won 13 league titles and two Champions Leagues among his impressive trophy haul.

Hernandez was part of Ferguson’s final Premier League title triumph and has watched from afar as United floundered for much of the nine years that have followed.

The LA Galaxy striker hates the way things have panned out for a club he retains so much affection for and believes the Old Trafford giants need to focus on what is to come rather than what they have lost.

The 21-year-old is expected to become Pep Guardiola’s fifth summer signing following the arrivals of Erling Haaland, Kalvin Phillips, Julian Alvarez and Stefan Ortega.

Gomez is viewed as a development player by City, however, and though it is not beyond the realms of possibility that he stays if signed, the expectation would be a loan.

It is understood that City are still exploring additions at full-back to account for the departure of Oleksandr Zinchenko, who joined Arsenal in a £30m deal last month.

The Guardian says the discussions over personal terms for the 27-year-old France midfielder are still at an early stage with approval still needed from his agent and mother. The paper notes he has achieved success with five Ligue 1 titles at Paris St Germain as well as another in Serie A, but he also has a uneven discipline record including fines for lateness.

The Red Devils are also said to be interested in Lazio’s Serbia midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, who they have been linked with for a number of years. But the Telegraph reports intermediaries believe a deal can actually be done for the 27-year-old.

Belgium international Amadou Onana has signed for Everton from LOSC Lille for an undisclosed fee, agreeing a five-year contract until the end of June 2027.

The 20-year-old central midfielder becomes Everton’s fifth signing of the summer following James Tarkowski, Rúben Vinagre, Dwight McNeil and Conor Coady.

“It feels great to join Everton. I know it’s a big, big club, one of the biggest in England,” Onana told evertontv. “It’s something I want to be part of for many years.”

Kostic heading to Italy

Juventus are close to completing the signing of Eintracht Frankfurt’s Filip Kostic.

The German club say Kostic will not feature in Wednesday’s Super Cup Final against Real Madrid and confirmed he is in “final talks with a new club” after entering the final year of his contract.

West Ham United made an offer for Kostic last month - but his preference was to play Champions League football with Juve set to be his next destination.

RB Leipzig have confirmed the signing Red Bull Salzburg‘s Benjamin Sesko in the latest high-profile deal between the sister clubs.

The 19-year-old Slovenia international will stay with the Austrian champions this season before starting a five-year contract with Leipzig next summer.

Manchester United were one of a number of clubs interested in Sesko but Leipzig have won the race.

“Benjamin Sesko is one of Europe’s best young talents and has a great amount of potential,” Leipzig technical director Christopher Vivell said in a club statement.

Sesko joins a stellar list of deals between the two clubs which were both owned by drinks firm Red Bull until 2017 when Uefa intervened over integrity concerns in the Champions League.

Chelsea are currently £10m short of Leicester City‘s valuation for Wesley Fofana, as the London club prepare another bid that could spark their busiest period of the window. The Stamford Bridge hierarchy are also working on deals for Frenkie de Jong and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

While Leicester’s public stance is that neither Fofana nor James Maddison are for sale, sources close to the situation insist the club’s financial circumstances - which has seen the Thai owners’ duty free-based business suffer through two years of the pandemic - means one will likely have to go, albeit at high prices.

The feeling within the market is that Fofana is gettable for £80m and Maddison for £60m. Newcastle United remain someway short of the latter price, and Leicester would be more keen to keep the playmaker.

Manchester United are in negotiations with Adrien Rabiot’s mother and agent, Veronique, over personal terms, according to Sky Sports’ Italian correspondents.

The club have already agreed the terms of a deal with Juventus to sign Rabiot with the Old Lady satisfied to let him go despite the midfielder still having a year left on his contract.

Spurs closing in on Udogie

Tottenham are close to completing a £21m deal to sign Udinese defender Destin Udogie according to ESPN. Part of the deal would see Spurs loan the left-back back to the Serie A club for this season before he joins up with his new team in the summer of 2023.

ESPN say that Tottenham will pay an initial £15m with a series of performance related add-ons worth in the region of £6m with a medical expected to take place in Italy this week for the 19-year-old.

Should Udogie’s transfer be completed, he will become Antonio Conte’s seventh summer signing following Ivan Perisic, Richarlison, Fraser Forster, Djed Spence, Yves Bissouma and Clement Lenglet.

Juventus have reportedly agreed to sell Adrien Rabiot to Manchester United for an initial £15million. The Guardian says the discussions over personal terms for the 27-year-old France midfielder are still at an early stage with approval still needed from his agent and mother. The paper notes he has achieved success with five Ligue 1 titles at Paris St Germain as well as another in Serie A, but he also has a uneven discipline record including fines for lateness.

The Red Devils are also said to be interested in Lazio’s Serbia midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, who they have been linked with for a number of years. But the Telegraph reports intermediaries believe a deal can actually be done for the 27-year-old.

Benjamin Sesko has joined RB Leipzig in a £20m deal which is another transfer window blow for Manchester United who were rumoured to be interested in the striker.

The 19-year-old Slovenia striker makes the move from RB Salzburg and has signed a contract until 2028. Sesko will be loaned back to Salzburg for the forthcoming season before joining the Bundesliga club in 2023.

According to the Daily Mail, Manchester United’s opening bid of £7.5m for Marko Arnautovic was dismissed by Bologna and a report from the Guardian suggests that the club would have to pay closer to £10m if they want to secure the striker.

Arnautovic’s brother and agent, Danijel, told Austrian outlet Kurier that there has been an offer for the former West Ham Utd and Stoke City forward saying: “It’s true that there is an offer from a well-known club. I’m in contact with Bologna to see if that can be realised.”

Bologna manager Sinisa Mihajlovic, meanwhile, has said that he expects Arnautovic to remain with the Serie A club.

“I would be happy for Marko [if he joins United] but I don’t think he will leave,” he said. “I spoke to Arnautovic about Man Utd’s proposal in case he leaves.

“We will see, but I think he will stay.”
