Why Spurs believe Postecoglou can be their new Pochettino

Monday 5 June 2023 13:50 , Alex Young

In Ange Postecoglou, Tottenham would be appointing a coach with a reputation for playing exactly the kind of "free-flowing, attacking and entertaining" football which chairman Daniel Levy wants to return to, but perhaps most appealing about the Australian is his record of uniting fractured clubs.

Spurs finished a miserable campaign with a broken dressing room — the players' confidence shattered by their public evisceration by Antonio Conte and the 6-1 humiliation at Newcastle — and fans calling for Levy to resign and out of patience with several members of the squad. The mood could not be more different to the heyday of

Mauricio Pochettino's tenure, when a thread of unity ran through the club from boardroom to terraces, directly through the charismatic Argentine.

After the underwhelming tenures of Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte, Spurs desperately want to go back to being a united club again.

Cucurella could be sold this summer

Monday 5 June 2023 13:37 , Alex Young

Chelsea will demand in excess of £20million to sell Ian Maatsen, whose future could have a say on Marc Cucurella’s, writes Nizaar Kinsella.

Burnley are keen to retain Maatsen’s services preferably on a permanent transfer, but Chelsea have not ruled out keeping hold of the 21-year-old, with the future of Cucurella uncertain as new manager Mauricio Pochettino prepares to take the reins next month.

The Spaniard failed to impress during a difficult first campaign that followed his high-profile £63m switch from Brighton last summer and could yet be sold or loaned out himself during the upcoming transfer window.

A departure for Cucurella would leave Chelsea short on left-back options as things stand, with Ben Chilwell their only other natural senior option in the position.

Gundogan: Why everyone wants clutch captain

Monday 5 June 2023 13:15 , Alex Young

As proven in the FA Cup final, and by the chase for his signature, Ilkay Gundogan still has so much to offer.

Pep Guardiola sees Gundogan as a mature individual and a dependable player who rises to the big occasion and leads by example.

That was perfectly showcased at Wembley — notably the first 13 seconds of the game — when he cannoned in the first of two match-winning volleys to propel City two thirds of the way to English football’s second-ever Treble.

He is the ultimate clutch player, always rising to the occasion. No wonder City are desperate to keep him, and why Arsenal need him.

Osimhen open to Napoli exit

Monday 5 June 2023 10:31 , Alex Young

Victor Osimhen “doesn’t mind” if he stays at Napoli or moves on this summer.

The Nigerian has become one of Europe’s top strikers during his time at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona, hitting 30 goals this season to fire Luciano Spalletti’s side to their first Serie A title since 1990.

Such exploits have seen Osimhen linked with a big-money exit from Italy, with Manchester United and Chelsea said to be among the clubs interested in the player, who still has two years left to run on his current contract in Naples and is expected to have an asking price worth more than £100m.

“I don’t know, the president [Aurelio De Laurentiis] has to decide that. I love the people of Napoli, they have shown me so much love. For me, I don’t mind, the president decides and I will just go with the flow,” Osimhen told DAZN when asked if he would still be at Napoli next season after Sunday night’s season-ending 2-0 win over Sampdoria in which he registered a second-half penalty.

Abraham injury dashes transfer hopes

Monday 5 June 2023 07:42 , Alex Young

Horrible scenes in Italy last night as Tammy Abraham faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines after suffering a horror knee injury in Roma's final game of the season.

Abraham was stretchered off shortly after his introduction as a substitute in the second half against Spezia, with initial reports claiming he has suffered an ACL injury and could face up to nine months out.

Abraham recently missed out on England's latest squad after a frustrating season in front of goal for Roma, scoring just nine goals in 53 appearances.

But the striker was poised for a big transfer this summer, with Roma reportedly ready to cash in on a player they signed from Chelsea for around £28million in 2021. Those hopes are now over.

Real Madrid want Kane and Havertz

Monday 5 June 2023 07:05 , Alex Young

Real Madrid are pushing ahead with deals for Harry Kane and Kai Havertz, with both strikers have been identified as replacements for Karim Benzema.

That's where Havertz comes in. The German is one of several players who could depart Chelsea this summer as a bloated squad undergoes a major transformation under incoming manager Mauricio Pochettino.

Havertz is admired by Madrid, with Fabrizio Romano and German newspaper Bild reporting that a summer move is already in the works with Carlo Ancelotti targeting the striker.

Transfer specialist Romano insists that no talks have yet taken place between the clubs, but discussions are expected soon and Chelsea are open to selling as they look to make a profit on the £75.8m they paid three years ago.

Chelsea weigh up selling Cucurella

Monday 5 June 2023 06:22 , Alex Young

Chelsea will demand in excess of £20million to sell Ian Maatsen, whose future could have a say on Marc Cucurella's, writes Nizaar Kinsella.

Burnley are keen to retain Maatsen's services preferably on a permanent transfer, but Chelsea have not ruled out keeping hold of the 21-year-old, with the future of Cucurella uncertain as new manager Mauricio Pochettino prepares to take the reins next month.

Ancelotti speaks after £100m Harry Kane links

Sunday 4 June 2023 21:31 , George Flood

Carlo Ancelotti has opened up on what he wants from any new strikers this summer amid Real Madrid links to Harry Kane.

Los Blancos are said to be preparing a blockbuster £100m offer for the Tottenham talisman having confirmed earlier today that Ballon d’Or holder Karim Benzema would be leaving the Bernabeu this summer after 14 years in order to make a big-money switch to Saudi Arabia.

Kane is far from Madrid’s only target, with the likes of Chelsea’s Kai Havertz also believed to be in their sights as Madrid actually prepare for the exits of multiple forwards in Benzema, the Paris Saint-Germain bound Marco Asensio, Mariano and Eden Hazard, whose mutual contract termination was announced on Saturday.

“We need signings in attack and we will do that,” said Ancelotti after Real closed their LaLiga season with a 1-1 home draw against Athletic Bilbao in which Benzema scored a penalty and received a standing ovation on his farewell appearance.

“We want to sign a striker that can score goals and link up well — so, a striker that plays football well.

“Benzema told us about his decision to leave the club this morning, it was really unexpected. His departure was surprising, now we have time to think about what we should do. We will sign strikers.”

Victor Osimhen says he “doesn’t mind” if he stays at Napoli or moves on this summer.
