Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino has praised debutant Juan Foyth after his display in their 1-0 League Cup win over Championship side Barnsley.

Pochettino’s side, entering the competition at the third round due to their involvement in the Champions League, had Dele Alli to thank after they struggled to break down a resilient and well drilled Barnsley side, not managing to muster a shot on target until after the hour mark.

19-year-old Foyth, who made the move to the Premier League from Argentinean side Estudiantes, was handed his first start of the season, looking composed throughout, and Pochettino spoke highly of his compatriot.

“It is difficult because he plays his first game with not too much time to know the way that we play or to work with the team, the whole team I think he was calm and relaxed in the game.

“I am happy because obviously it is difficult, he came from Argentina to play in England it is not easy and then his debut is at Wembley, that is more pressure on the debut.”

Despite having seen his side struggle to a second win at the national stadium this season, the former Southampton boss said that he was happy to have reached the fourth round.

“The performance was good, a lot of positive things to take from tonight, and then the objective is to go to the next stage, we achieved that and that is why we are happy.”
