Tory Nyhaug pursues 13th Canadian BMX title after Rio disappointment

Tory Nyhaug will have to put aside the disappointment of not winning an Olympic medal while pursuing a 13th Canadian title at the BMX championships this weekend in Calgary.

The 24-year-old from Coquitlam, B.C., missed out on a bronze medal in Rio de Janeiro by 0.157 seconds in the men's BMX final on Aug. 19.

A two-time Olympian, Nyhaug completed the course in 35.674 seconds, just 1.032 seconds behind the gold-medal winner, 23-year-old Connor Fields of the United States.

"There are guys battling everywhere," Nyhaug, the lone Canadian in the event, said after the race. "But I came out of [the Olympics] healthy and with a fifth [place result] so I'll look back on this and be proud even though I didn't get a medal."

Nyhaug, who won gold in men's BMX at last summer's Pan Am Games in Toronto, finished 18th at the 2012 London Olympics.

He has experienced an up-and-down 2016 season, having won his share of time trials on the World Cup circuit but crashing on his qualifying run at the world championships in Medellin, Colombia, at the end of May.

The time trial is scheduled for Friday night, followed by the BMX motos for all categories on Saturday. The series champion will be crowned after Sunday's Canada Cup BMX Finals.
