Tory leadership race latest: Liz Truss to launch campaign as second round of voting gets underway

The second round of voting in the Tory leadership election is set to take place today, as the MPs whittle down the shortlist of candidates further before the final two go to a ballot of party members.

Jeremy Hunt and Nadhim Zahawi were eliminated from the race on Wednesday after failing to secure the 30 votes required - winning 18 and 25 votes respectively.

Rishi Sunak, the former chancellor, came out on top with 88 votes, followed by Penny Mordaunt on 67.

Liz Truss, the Foreign Secretarym, came third, with 50 votes, followed by Tom Tugendhat on 37 and Suella Braverman on 32.

Ms Truss is set to hold her official campaign launch today, promising to "level up in a Conservative way".

She is expected to say: "My mission in politics is to give every child, every person, the best opportunity to succeed, and for their success in life to depend solely on their hard work and talents, not their background or where they are from.

"I am ready to be prime minister on day one. I can lead, make tough decisions and rise to the moment."
