Raptors raise championship banner, receive rings ahead of season opener against Pelicans

There’s no doubt that Tuesday night was a special one for the entire Toronto Raptors organization and their boisterous fans.

Following their triumph over the Golden State Warriors in the NBA Finals back in June and a summer of celebrating the team’s first title in franchise history, the Raptors finally got to see their championship banner in the rafters of Scotiabank Arena and receive their rings. Both took place during a special ceremony ahead of the team’s opening game of the 2019-20 season against the New Orleans Pelicans.

With NBA commissioner Adam Silver there to lead the ceremony, each member of the Raptors 2019 roster and staff was handed quite the customized piece of jewellery. To the surprise of nobody, many had fun during their time in the spotlight.

Once everyone had inspected the goods, Kyle Lowry and the rest of the squad’s veterans counted down before the banner was unveiled for all to see.

It was a sight that left many emotional, most notably Serge Ibaka.

The players weren’t the only ones that left the building with some new bling, though. To ensure the unforgettable night remained just that, every single fan in attendance also received an exact replica of the bands the Raptors were given.

So, expect the organization and its supporters to be a little extra obnoxious online for the next little while. Essentially, 20,000+ people got engaged at the exact same time so you know there will be plenty of photos on Instagram, long-winded Facebook statuses about their allegiance to the squad since 1995 and even more happy tears. (Feeling a little left out? Go ahead and spend anywhere between $300 and $4,950 for a championship ring of your own).

But with Kawhi Leonard leaving Toronto at the alter over the summer, we’ll quickly see if this marriage between the Raptors and a title defence has any hope of becoming a reality.
