Raptors' Kyle Lowry to perform as cannon doll in production of 'The Nutcracker'

Kyle Lowry has proven that he’s more than capable of stepping up and shining on basketball’s biggest stage. It was only a few months ago that the five-time All-Star picked up 26 points, 10 assists and seven rebounds to help his Toronto Raptors defeat the Golden State Warriors in Game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals and secure their first championship in franchise history.

Just before Christmas, the 33-year-old will attempt to manufacture another sparkling performance on a literal stage.

The National Ballet of Canada announced on Monday that Lowry will join their production of ‘The Nutcracker’ as a cannon doll at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts in Toronto on Dec. 19.

As the National Ballet’s release explains, celebrity walk-on roles are a longstanding tradition for performances of ‘The Nutcracker’ around the globe. Toronto sports fans may remember the enthusiastic interpretations of the role that Maple Leafs stars Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner presented last year.

Dressed up as a Russian Petrouchka doll, Lowry will be tasked with shooting a cannon into the audience to kick off the battle scene early in the show.

Beginning on Dec. 11, ‘The Nutcracker’ will run for nearly a month. Other celebrities set to perform as cannon dolls include the co-founder of WE Marc Kielburger, Canadian pole vault star Alysha Newman and singer Tyler Shaw.

While we’re sure it’s been pretty cool for Lowry’s children to see him play in the NBA, watching their father act like a goof in a theatrical setting should be a unique experience for them. In fact, it may be better than any Christmas gift that they ask for.
