After the club put Lourdes Gurriel Jr. on the 10-day injured list with a left quad strain on Aug. 10, the team should know how well his recovery is progressing shortly.

According to Shi Davidi of Sportsnet, Gurriel Jr. will have a follow-up MRI on Sunday to assess his healing. On top of that, he’ll undergo functional testing on Saturday and Sunday. Results of the MRI will help determine the timetable for his return.

While watching Lourdes Gurriel Jr. rolling in the dirt near first base following an infield single in the ninth inning against the New York Yankees on Aug. 8, the 25-year-old’s situation didn’t look too good.

Replays of his run down the baseline showed him grimacing and holding his leg well before reaching the bag. And although he exited the game following the play, fans were essentially told not to worry much about it.

"I just went to see Gurriel, he should be fine,” Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo said following the contest. “It wasn't the knee. He felt a cramp in his quad, but he didn't pull anything. So, it looks like he's going to be OK."

Gurriel Jr. is targeting the Aug. 31 to Sept. 1 series with the Houston Astros to potential rejoin the squad, according to TSN. A rehab game or two in Florida will likely occur before his next big league appearance, though.

Through 79 games this season, he’s hitting .279 with 19 home runs and 47 RBI.
