Top 4 of College Football Playoff rankings stays the same after Week 12

After Week 12, the top four of the College Football Playoff rankings remained the same.

Undefeated Alabama remained at No. 1, followed by Ohio State at No. 2, Michigan at No. 3 and Clemson at No. 4. As for Louisville, its blowout loss at Houston last week dropped it from No. 5 all the way to No. 11.

Louisville’s slide allowed Washington to move up from No. 6 to No. 5, while two-loss teams Wisconsin, Penn State, Oklahoma, Colorado and Oklahoma State all slid up one spot to round out the top 10 at Nos. 6-10.

After its seventh win in a row, USC somewhat surprisingly moved up just one spot to No. 12.

One notable rise in the rankings was Florida, which climbed eight spots from No. 23 to No. 15 after its win over LSU (which dropped out of the Top 25) to clinch the SEC East title. The biggest drop of the week was Utah, which dropped a whopping 10 spots from No. 12 to No. 22 after its home loss to Oregon.

Elsewhere, the battle for the Group of Five representative in a New Year’s Six bowl remains tight. Boise State remains ahead of undefeated Western Michigan, but Boise needs help. The Group of Five bid goes to conference champions only. For that to happen, the Broncos need Wyoming to lose this weekend (provided Boise gets past Air Force) in order to secure the Mountain West’s Mountain division.

Another Group of Five team, Navy, made its 2016 rankings debut at No. 25 after wrapping up the AAC West division on Saturday.

Though there wasn’t much movement this week, plenty of change is coming with rivalry week ahead. Most notably, Ohio State hosts rival Michigan in a game that could decide a playoff spot. And if Ohio State wins and No. 7 Penn State takes care of business at home against Michigan State, the Nittany Lions would win the Big Ten East ahead of the Buckeyes and Wolverines.

Friday’s Apple Cup game between Washington and Washington State will decide the Pac-12 North, giving the fifth-ranked Huskies a chance to further pad their resume. And the Pac-12 South will be decided by No. 9 Colorado’s matchup with the Utes. If the Buffs win, they win the South. If Colorado loses, the division goes to USC.

Other games between ranked teams include the Iron Bowl (No. 1 Alabama vs. No. 13 Auburn) and No. 14 Florida State vs. No. 15 Florida.
