Tony Romo getting closer as he throws passes in Cowboys practice

The Dallas Cowboys, in some ways, have caught a break. They haven’t had to decide on Tony Romo or Dak Prescott as their quarterback because Romo isn’t healthy enough to play.

But he’s getting closer.

Romo was back on the field Wednesday throwing passes for the first time since his back injury during individual drills (to former Cowboys receiver Miles Austin … didn’t see that one coming), according to multiple reporters at practice.

Romo wasn’t dressed out for practice like everyone else, so this has to be considered a very small first step in him getting back on the field in a more official capacity. But it is a step.

Romo has been out since the preseason with a broken bone in his back, and he hasn’t had to rush back because rookie Prescott has been so good. But the longer Prescott has played well, the ultimate decision on who to play when Romo is healthy has become tougher. It’s hard to bench a quarterback of a one-loss team with a rating over 100, even if he’s a rookie. It’s also tough to tell Romo, a four-time Pro Bowler, he doesn’t get his job back.

Dallas doesn’t need to make that decision now. But seeing Romo throwing on the field is a stark reminder that it’s coming soon.
