Tony Finau's ankle injury looks gruesome after top-10 Masters finish

Tony Finau finished tied for 10th at the Masters this past weekend, an impressive showing for anyone on one of golf’s biggest stages.

But when you look at the circumstances surrounding Finau’s performance — and how the 28-year-old was nearly sidelined before play even started at Augusta National — his finish is even more impressive.

Finau injured his ankle in one of the worst ways possible ahead of the Masters while celebrating after hitting a hole-in-one during the annual Par-3 contest. After being cleared by doctors to play, Finau toughed it out and showed few signs of injury throughout the weekend, shooting a 7-under par.

But on Monday, Finau went back to the doctor and shared pictures of his ankle on Instagram, making everyone wonder how he even played in the first place.

While an MRI shortly after his injury revealed nothing more than the equivalent of a high ankle sprain, these pictures certainly make it look way worse.

Although after seeing him go down the way he did in the first place, it makes sense.

Yet it seemingly didn’t effect him on the course. He even held the lead for a brief time Thursday.

“To be in this position I’m at now [from] when I woke up this morning, nothing short of a miracle if you ask me,” he said after the first round. “I could barely put any pressure on it. I could barely walk.”

But by the sight of his ankle on Monday, it looks like Finau will be taking some well-earned time off.
