Tom Thibodeau isn’t giving up just yet.

According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, the Minnesota Timberwolves president and head coach met with Jimmy Butler on Monday and “tried to convince him to eventually rejoin the team.”

Butler, though, is still sitting out and waiting for the Timberwolves to honor his trade request that he put in last week.

Butler was “granted permission to not participate in” Minnesota’s season-opening festivities, including the team’s media day on Monday. The All-Star forward requested that the Timberwolves trade him to the Los Angeles Clippers, Brooklyn Nets or New York Knicks last week, wanting out of Minnesota after just one year.

Thibodeau, who coached Butler in Chicago, was naturally against this, and initially said that he had no plans to trade Butler even though he wanted out.

Even though Butler is set to become a free agent next summer, and could sign a more lucrative, long-term deal then, 40 percent of teams in the league are reportedly interested in making a deal for him now, including the Miami Heat, Houston Rockets, Philadelphia 76ers, Cleveland Cavaliers, Toronto Raptors, Portland Trail Blazers and more.

As weird as the situation in the Twin Cities is getting, Thibodeau was still very calm at the team’s media day on Monday, saying they aren’t going to “make a bad deal.”

Butler averaged 22.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.9 assist for the Timberwolves last season, leading them to their first playoff berth since 2004.
