Since his arrival at the University of Texas in late November, Tom Herman has been living modestly by a major college football coach’s standards.

With his wife and kids staying back in Houston through the end of the school year, Herman told reporters Wednesday that he has been staying in a 900-square-foot, two bedroom apartment in Austin. But with recruiting for the 2017 cycle in the books, he has a new place lined up with a familiar landlord: Major Applewhite.

That’s right, the man who now occupies Herman’s former role as Houston head coach is now renting his Austin property to his former boss.

From the Dallas Morning News:

As of today, though, the Herman family will have a little more elbow room in Austin. Tom Herman said he is moving his things into a rental home that unexpectedly came open. His new landlord is a name Texas fans will recognize: Major Applewhite.

Yep, the same Applewhite who was a standout quarterback at Texas under Mack Brown and was Herman’s offensive coordinator at Houston before Herman took over the Longhorn helm. Herman’s departure paved the way for Applewhite’s hiring as Houston’s head coach. Considering the circumstances, one would imagine Major and wife Julie are giving the Hermans a reasonable rental rate.

“It so happens their tenant was moving out Feb. 1,” Tom Herman said. “I said, ‘If you’ll rent it to us month-to-month, we’d love to do it.’ Now when the kids and Michelle come to visit on weekends we’ll have a little bit more room to spread out.”

The two are very familiar with one another. Applewhite, who played quarterback at UT and was an assistant for the Longhorns from 2011-2013, was Herman’s offensive coordinator for two seasons in Houston before Herman left for the Texas job. And when Herman left, Applewhite was promoted to head coach.

Herman’s new gig is working out quite well for Applewhite, huh?
