Tom Herman on possibility of adding QB Brandon Harris: We've got to win

Texas is recruiting former LSU quarterback Brandon Harris.

Harris, a graduate transfer, is eligible to play immediately at his new school in 2017. Per Orangebloods.com, Texas is working on having Harris visit the campus to pitch him on the idea of playing for the Longhorns.

Right now, Texas has sophomore Shane Buechele and freshman Sam Ehlinger competing for the starting quarterback position. Buechele was the primary QB for the Longhorns in 2016 as Tyrone Swoopes served in more of a hybrid running back role.

Why would Texas want a grad transfer like Harris to compete with Buechele and Ehlinger? The answer is fairly simple, according to Herman.

“We’ve got to win,” Herman said. “We’ve lost seven games three straight seasons around here. If the grad transfer is better than those two and can beat them out then we’ll worry about their growth next spring.”

Buechele was 236-391 passing for 2,958 yards, 21 touchdowns and 11 interceptions as a freshman in 2016. The Longhorns finished 5-7; the last time Texas finished above .500 was in 2013 in Mack Brown’s final season as coach.

Harris himself said that he figured he’d head to Texas to have a very good chance to start. Harris decided to leave LSU after he was benched for Purdue transfer Danny Etling in 2016. A former four-star recruit, Harris never clicked with the LSU offense. He threw just 25 passes in 2016 as Etling threw 269.

“I am not saying how coach Herman is thinking, because I don’t know how he thinks, or how [offensive coordinator Tim Beck] thinks, but I don’t see any situation where a guy brings a senior in for one year to sit on the bench,” Harris told Orangebloods. “I’m not saying they are promising me anything. I haven’t been promised anything. I’m just saying, rationally speaking, in most scenarios if you think you’re solid at quarterback, and I don’t (know) what they think. You probably know more than I do, but if they think they’re solid at quarterback, they probably don’t do that.”

Texas is far from Harris’ only suitor. He last visited North Carolina, a team with a bigger need at quarterback. Carolina was initially planning on having Mitch Trubisky back for 2017, but a good 2016 and good reviews from NFL scouts meant Trubisky declared for the NFL draft.

Harris isn’t the only potential big-impact grad transfer quarterback either. Former Notre Dame QB Malik Zaire hasn’t announced where he’s heading for 2017 and is reportedly considering North Carolina and Wisconsin.
