Toledo football player Jahneil Douglas, 22, killed in shooting

Jahneil Douglas, a junior defensive tackle on the University of Toledo football team, was killed in a shooting on Tuesday night. He was 22 years old.

According to WTOL, Douglas was shot outside of a pizza restaurant in Toledo around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday. Police told WTOL there was a fight outside of the restaurant between two men. Douglas was transported to the hospital, where he later died. No arrests have been made.

“We were all shocked to learn of the tragic death of Jahneil Douglas,” Toledo athletic director Mike O’Brien said. “This is a devastating loss for our football team and our University, and a very sad day for all of us in Rocket Nation. Our deepest condolences go out to Jahneil’s family and friends.”

Rockets head coach Jason Candle described Douglas as a “hard-working young man who was loved by his teammates and coaches.”

“The Toledo Football family is heartbroken by the loss of Jahneil,” Candle said. “He was a hard-working young man who was loved by all his teammates and coaches. Our sincerest condolences go out to Jahneil’s family and friends during these difficult times. Jahneil will forever be a part of the Rocket Football family.”

Douglas, a Toledo native, signed with his hometown university out of Start High School in the class of 2017. The 6-foot-3, 300-pound Douglas played in a combined 12 games over the past two seasons, registering two tackles.
