Rashad Weaver, the former Pitt defensive end who was drafted in the fourth round by the Tennessee Titans on Saturday, has been charged with one count of assault over an incident with a woman that took place in Pittsburgh last month.

According to the criminal complaint, which was viewed by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, police found a woman lying in the street in the early hours of April 18. One witness at the scene told police that they saw a large man punch the woman in the head. The man was later identified as Weaver, who was not there when police arrived. Another witness told police that they didn't see Weaver punch the woman, but saw her fall to the ground.

The incident that sparked the alleged assault started a few minutes before the punch reportedly happened. According to the police report, the same officers who found the woman in the street had separated her and Weaver at a bar while they were having a fight five minutes earlier. The details of the dispute are unknown, but the woman later told police that she'd thrown her drink on Weaver during the course of the argument.

The criminal complaint says that as Weaver was leaving the bar, he “stated to other officers on scene that he had no problem hitting a female if they needed it.”

The woman was checked out by medics at the scene and released. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that when she was contacted by police about the incident several days later, she told them that she'd ended up going to the hospital after experiencing vomiting and had been diagnosed with a concussion.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 5. Weaver's lawyer, Dennis M. Blackwell, released a statement on his behalf on Monday afternoon.
