Timberline High varsity tennis player collapses during practice, dies

A Timberline High School varsity tennis player has died after collapsing during practice Monday, the Boise School District confirmed.

Justin Smith was transported to St. Luke’s Boise Medical Center, but life-saving measures were unsuccessful, and the 17-year-old was pronounced dead at 6:20 p.m. Monday in the emergency room, according to a news release Thursday from Ada County Coroner Richard D. Riffle. The cause and manner of death are pending.

An investigation is being conducted by the Boise Police Department.

Smith was listed as a singles player in Timberline’s most recent match results.

Timberline High has a crisis team in place to meet the needs of students, parents and school personnel. Counselors are available for students, staff or families who may need or want help regarding this loss. Timberline families and staff are encouraged to contact Timberline’s counseling department with questions or concerns.

“We realize that this is difficult information to process and are deeply saddened by this loss,” the Boise School District said in a statement. “As a school family and community we will support one another and work through this the best way we possibly can. Please remember this family in your thoughts.”

A GoFundMe account has been started on behalf of Smith’s family, and it has already raised more than $18,000.

“As an outstanding student, tennis player, friend, brother and son, Justin’s life has positively impacted so many,” Jennifer Price wrote on GoFundMe. “The gravity of grief is real and it is at times like this we have an opportunity to come together as a community to show our love and support.”
