TikTok rallies around woman who shared 'flaky friend' horror story: 'So selfish'

Setting boundaries is an important part of establishing healthy relationships, which is why TikTok users are rallying around one woman who explained why she decided to set some with a friend who wasn’t treating her well.

Emily Dame (@emmy_g718) recently posted a video talking about “flaky friends,” and it has struck a nerve with a lot of viewers.

In the video, Dame described that she believes she is a “good friend” but, sadly, does not seem to have had that good friendship reciprocated.

She shared the story of how she had tried to meet up with a friend she hadn’t seen “in months and months,” but the friend was not responsive to Dame’s texts or calls and changed the plan they had set several times.

The friend ultimately asked Dame to pick up food for them to eat together — but then wasn’t even home when Dame arrived. To add insult to injury, it was raining, and Dame couldn’t get into the house.

Dame decided to leave after 10 minutes and left her friend’s food outside. Dame parked on the side of the road to enjoy her own food when her friend finally called back nearly 30 minutes later, only to offer no explanation or apology other than that she didn’t see the texts.

Apparently, the friend had been inside the whole time in the basement playing video games with her husband and claimed she just didn’t see the texts or get the calls.

“Do you guys have friends that do this, because I feel like every friend is so flaky, and I would never do this?!” Dame asked at the end of the video.

In the comment section, Dame finally got the support she was craving, as comments poured in saying that a real friend would never treat someone that way and that she was perfectly right to uphold her boundaries.

“Real friends do not do this,” @omghayley wrote. “She should have been waiting for you at the door to let you in immediately from the rain. Keep those boundaries.”

“I couldn’t imagine doing that to a friend. I couldn’t imagine even doing this to an acquaintance,” added the @black_cat_lady.

“I guess I have friends like that but they are employed by DoorDash and I have to pay them…” quipped Samantha Snyder in a comment that garnered over 1,400 hearts.

Dame ended up posting two follow-up TikToks after her original video quickly went viral and gathered well over 67,000 views in less than a day.

In the first follow-up, she thanked everyone who had chimed in on the comments and admitted that hearing from other people — “99.99%” of whom had assured her that was not normal “friend” behavior by any means — had helped her realize how much she had been putting up with.

“I genuinely was not sure if people have friends that do this, like is this a normal thing?” Dame said. “I thought like, you know, I’m not the most perfect friend … so am I being like too picky, like nitpicking her, like is this just something that I should just overlook?”

In a second follow-up video, Dame addressed some of the commenters who had warned her that her “friend” may have just not wanted to actually hang out with her but didn’t have the nerve to actually tell her, a theory that Dame dismissed.

“I think that she just genuinely did not care about anything other than what was going on in front of her,” Dame said. “I think she’s just so selfish.”

Ultimately, Dame decided that she would be listening to all of the people who recommended she drop this friend immediately and not tolerate any similar behavior from anyone who claims to be a “friend.”

“It’s nice to be told that I’m doing well with my boundary setting, because I’ve never had boundaries ever before,” Dame said. “So I’m definitely learning this.”
