Tiger Woods sheds walking boot in rare public appearance alongside young athlete with cancer

Tiger Woods has understandably kept a low profile since the February car crash that left him with substantial leg injuries.

He's made social media appearances, including a congratulatory tweet to his old rival Phil Mickelson for his PGA Championship victory on Sunday. But until this week, he's only been known to show himself in public once — an April photo on crutches that he shared on Instagram.

On Monday, a new photo of Woods surfaced on social media. This one he didn't provide. It was posted on Instagram by 10-year-old athlete Luna Perrone.

Perrone, who writes that she's battling bone cancer, shared a picture of herself alongside Woods in what appears to be a meeting at her soccer game over the weekend. Perrone's decked out in her soccer gear alongside a smiling Woods on crutches and wearing a compression sleeve over his injured right leg.

He's also shed the walking boot that he was seen wearing on his right leg in his April photo.

"I got to have a quick chat with @tigerwoods this weekend when I bumped into him at the soccer fields!" Perrone wrote. "He told me to ‘stay strong’ which has always been my goal! Stay strong physically and mentally and inspire others to do the same! No matter what you are going through YOU GOT THIS!!!"

Perrone describes herself as "One tough girl battling Ewing’s Sarcoma (rare bone cancer) ⚽️ legend, 🥎 star, model" on her Instagram page, while asking followers to "SHARE MY JOURNEY SO I CAN INSPIRE OTHERS!"

Making friends with Tiger Woods is certainly a good move for getting a message out.

As for Woods, his team hasn't provided any medical updates since a March tweet announcing that he had returned home from the hospital to continue his recovery. But his appearance in public without a walking boot looks like a sign that things are progressing in the right direction.
