With just seconds left on the clock at Mohegan Sun Arena, the Connecticut Sun were searching for a buzzer-beating shot to break an 83-83 tie with the Atlanta Dream on Tuesday night.

If nothing else, a miss would send it into overtime. What the Sun didn’t plan for, though, was Atlanta guard Tiffany Hayes.

With just three seconds left, Hayes jumped in and picked off a pass on the wing. She bolted down the other end of the court, taking two dribbles before tossing up a perfect long ball 3-pointer from well beyond the halfcourt line and found nothing but net, giving the Dream the three-point win.

Hayes’ shot not only gave the Dream the win on Tuesday, but marked their fifth-straight win and pushed Atlanta into a tie for first place in the Eastern Conference with the Washington Mystics.

It also marked the longest field goal in WNBA regular season history at 46.7 feet long.

Hayes — who is in her seventh season with the Dream — dropped 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds on Tuesday, second in points scored only behind Angel McCoughtry, who finished with 24 for the Dream.
