The Daily Sweat: Can Wake Forest and Virginia combine for 10 or more TDs to hit the over?

Do you like high-scoring football? Friday night has some games for you.

The four college football games set for the eve of Week 4 all have totals of at least 53.5. That number is the total for Syracuse and Liberty. Former Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze’s team is 3-0 and heads to Syracuse favored by 6.5 points. The Orange are +200 on the moneyline after scoring just seven points in their last game against an FBS opponent.

Liberty has scored over 40 points in two of its three games so far this season but those opponents were Campbell and Old Dominion. The Flames beat Troy 21-13 in Week 2. Couple that with Syracuse’s 17-7 loss to Rutgers that same weekend and we wouldn’t be surprised if the game goes under.

The game with the highest total is in the ACC as Wake Forest (3-0) travels to Virginia (2-1). UVA is favored by 3.5 points despite losing a track meet to North Carolina in Week 3 and the total is at 68.5.

Both teams have scored at least 35 points in each of their three games so far this season. Wake beat Florida State 35-14 in Week 3 while Virginia gave up 59 points in a 59-39 loss to the Tar Heels. That came a week after Virginia beat Illinois 42-14.

We’re intrigued by the over in this one, though that would require 10 touchdowns. And these teams have been overvalued so far this season by oddsmaker totals. Wake Forest games have gone under in every week so far this year, while Virginia’s loss to North Carolina was the first time a UVA game has gone over this season.

On the flip side, five of Wake’s last six road games have gone over. The Demon Deacons have also covered the spread in their last four games against Virginia.

No. 22 Fresno State is favored by a whopping 30.5 points against 0-3 UNLV in the 10 p.m. ET kickoff Friday night. The total in that game is 58.5 points as the Bulldogs stormed back to beat UCLA in a thrilling late-night cap to Week 3. Fresno State QB Jake Haener has thrown for 1,464 yards in four games and has 10 TD passes to just one interception.

This should be an easy win for Fresno State just like the spread indicates and we wouldn’t be surprised if the game goes under. Fresno could easily back off in the second half after jumping out to an early lead.

Bet the Ryder Cup all weekend

The Ryder Cup is one of the most fun events on the golf calendar and it's a haven for bettors with its team play format. There are plenty of angles at BetMGM to bet on for Friday afternoon's fourball matches and the Saturday foursomes and fourball. And Sunday provides 12 singles matches and a ton of action to keep an eye on alongside the NFL.

IndyCar finale is Sunday

BetMGM is offering IndyCar odds for the season finale at Long Beach on Sunday (3:30 p.m. ET, NBCSN). Colton Herta and Alex Palou enter as the favorites at +400 while Pato O’Ward is at +500 and Will Power is at +700.

Palou enters the finale 35 points ahead of O’Ward in the title race. IndyCar drivers get 50 points for a win and a point for a lap led — if O’Ward wins the race then Palou has to finish 16th or worse without any laps led for O’Ward to win the title. If he gets 54 points for winning the race, getting the pole and leading the most laps, Palou clinches the title by scoring 19 or more points.

We like Herta as the driver to win the race while Palou may play it a little conservatively given his big advantage over both O’Ward and Josef Newgarden. At 48 points back of Palou, Newgarden is still mathematically alive for the title but it would take an incredibly improbable event for both Palou and O’Ward for him to win the title.

Who cashed tickets on Thursday?

App State bettors were unhappy with Nate Noel's smart decision to go down short of the end zone late in his team's 31-30 win over Marshall. The Mountaineers were favored by 7.5 points and a TD and PAT would have put App State up 8.

Cardinals bettors continued to cash their tickets after a big comeback against the Brewers. Milwaukee took a 5-0 lead early and the Cardinals even moved to +750 to win at one point during the game. But the Cardinals scored eight runs over the final three innings for an 8-5 win and their 12th consecutive victory. St. Louis (83-69) is 4.5 games ahead of Philadelphia for the final wild-card spot with 10 games to play.
