The Daily Sweat: After a wild opening weekend, the NCAA tournament is wide open

After a wild weekend in the NCAA men’s tournament, only 16 teams remain.

And there have been a fair share of surprises. Through two rounds, two No. 1 seeds (Purdue and Kansas), two No. 2 seeds (Arizona and Marquette), one No. 3 seed (Baylor) and two No. 4 seeds (Virginia and Indiana) have already been eliminated from national championship contention.

The field truly feels wide open.

Houston, the No. 1 seed in the Midwest region, opened the tournament as the betting favorite to cut down the nets but is now second on the odds board at BetMGM behind Alabama. The Crimson Tide, the tournament’s top overall seed, is listed at +350 to win the title with UH next at +400.

From there, there are six teams listed between +800 and +1400. UCLA, the No. 2 seed in the West, is at +800 ahead of Texas (+900), UConn (+900), Creighton (+1000), Gonzaga (+1100) and Tennessee (+1400).

There’s also some really good value with a few high major teams who weren’t the highest seeds but seem to be peaking at the right time. Michigan State at +2500 is particularly intriguing, as is Miami down at +5000.

Here are the updated national championship odds, via BetMGM:

  • Alabama: +350

  • Houston: +400

  • UCLA: +800

  • Texas: +900

  • UConn: +900

  • Creighton: +1000

  • Gonzaga: +1100

  • Tennessee: +1400

  • Michigan State: +2500

  • Kansas State: +2500

  • Arkansas: +3000

  • Xavier: +3000

  • San Diego State: +4000

  • Miami: +5000

  • Florida Atlantic: +5000

  • Princeton: +15000

Let’s take a look at the betting slate for Monday:

2nd round of women’s tourney continues

While the men’s tournament will take a few-day pause before the Sweet 16, the second round of the women’s tournament will continue on Monday with eight games.

The tightest point spread comes in the Seattle regional where No. 3 Ohio State will square off with No. 6 North Carolina. Ohio State is a 5.5-point favorite.

Other intriguing matchups on the slate include No. 4 seed Villanova has just a 6.5-point favorite over No. 12 seed Florida Gulf Coast in Greenville. Additionally, No. 3 Duke is favored by 6.5 points over No. 6 Colorado in Seattle and No. 4 UCLA is also favored by 6.5 points over No. 5 Oklahoma in Greenville.

What’s going on in the NBA?

There are six games on tap for Monday night in the NBA. Three of those games stand out.

In the East, the Philadelphia 76ers are set to host the Chicago Bulls. Philadelphia has won eight straight games and is favored by 7.5 points at BetMGM.

Elsewhere, the reeling Minnesota Timberwolves will close out a three-game road trip in New York City vs. the Knicks. The Wolves have lost five of their last six games and are steadily sliding down the Western Conference standings. The Knicks, meanwhile, have won three straight and are up to the No. 5 spot in the East. New York is favored by 8.5 points.

In the West, the Memphis Grizzlies are 1.5-point home favorites over the Dallas Mavericks. Memphis knocked off the Golden State Warriors on Saturday while the Mavs beat the Los Angeles Lakers on a buzzer-beater on Friday night.

Anything else to bet on?

There’s always the NHL. There are five matchups on Monday night with the Calgary Flames vs. Los Angeles Kings meeting probably being the most competitive of the bunch as both teams are -110 on the moneyline.

There’s also the Mexico vs. Japan showdown in the World Baseball Classic. Japan is -275 on the moneyline with the total listed at 8.5 runs.

Additionally, if you’re looking for more men’s college basketball there are four games in the CBI on Monday. And three of them air in the afternoon — Eastern Kentucky at Indiana State (-6.5), Rice at Southern Utah (-6.5) and Radford at San Jose State (-6.5). The nightcap is UW-Milwaukee at Charlotte (-6.5).
