Texas Tech receiver Jonathan Giles says he is leaving the program, tweeting that it is in his best interest.

Giles led the Red Raiders in catches (69), receiving yards (1,158) and touchdown receptions (13) last season as a sophomore, after tallying 16 catches for 155 yards and three touchdowns as a freshman in 2015.

“It is with a heavy heart that I inform you all today that I have decided to transfer from Texas Tech University,” part of Giles’ statement read. “Texas Tech was a dream school for me growing up as a kid so to wear the double T was truly an honor and privilege.”

Giles was a three-star recruit out of Elkins High in Missouri City, Texas, in 2015.

Giles had been demoted to second-string coming out of spring practice, although coach Kliff Kingsbury had been pleased with Giles’ response as of two weeks ago.

From the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal:

“He’s been good,” Kingsbury said. “He’s still young. That’s the thing. He’s only a true sophomore this season and this spring, so he’s still learning the position and we know that, but we just wanted to push him. We felt he kind of hit a wall there for a bit and we wanted to motivate him and push him, and I think he’s responded well this spring.”

Giles is the second high-profile transfer to leave the Red Raiders after his sophomore season, joining defensive lineman Breiden Fehoko, who committed to LSU this month.
