During Monday’s Big 12 teleconference, Texas coach Charlie Strong was asked about his defense and all he could do is sigh.

“Where to start at?” Strong replied.

The play of the defense has been big talk around Austin and has prompted Strong to evaluate his assistant coaches during the next couple weeks while the Longhorns have a bye week.

“I’ll look at it here the next couple of weeks,” Strong said. “Each coach will be evaluated and we’ll see where we go from here.”

All eyes are on defensive coordinator Vance Bedford.

In two of the Longhorns’ three games this season, the Texas defense has allowed at least 47 points. This past weekend, Texas allowed 500 yards in a 50-43 loss to California. The Longhorns are eighth in the conference allowing 34.7 points per game.

The good news, however, is that the offense has been able to mostly keep pace, which has allowed Texas to start 2-1 for the first time since 2012.

This isn’t the first time Strong has had to make changes. Last year when the Longhorns offense struggled, he demoted playcaller Shawn Watson and promoted receiver coach Jay Norvell.
