Texas A&M runs away from Arkansas in second half to win 45-24
No. 10 Texas A&M capitalized on a 14-point swing in the third quarter to pull away from No. 17 Arkansas 45-24.
With the game tied 17-17 in the third quarter, Arkansas tried a quarterback sneak on 2nd-and-goal from the 1. The push didn’t get quarterback Austin Allen into the end zone. On third down, Arkansas tried a sneak again. Allen looked like he might have gotten into the end zone on a second effort, but he was ruled short when a review was inconclusive.
Instead of a third time being the charm, Arkansas tried a sweep with wide receiver Keon Hatcher, who lost five yards on fourth down. Two plays later, Texas A&M quarterback Trevor Knight hit wide receiver Josh Reynolds for a 92-yard touchdown. What could have been a 24-17 Arkansas lead was now in favor of A&M and the Aggies never looked back.
The Reynolds touchdown was one of three straight for A&M to put the game out of reach and give the Aggies a fifth-straight win over Arkansas.
The matchup at AT&T Stadium pitted two undefeated teams looking for the opportunity to be considered the clear early-season No. 2 in the SEC West to Alabama. And the A&M defense seized the opportunity, especially after Arkansas’ drive came up short at the goal line.
Before stalling out at the 1, Arkansas had the ball for 19 plays in a drive that covered 89 yards and nearly 10 minutes. Many 10-minute drives would break defenses, but Texas A&M got a surge of adrenaline from the stop and corralled the Hogs until the game was out of reach.
Knight also took advantage of an Arkansas defense that was focused on A&M’s other rushing weapons. He broke off three big runs on the way to 157 rushing yards. The Aggies had 372 rushing yards on just 35 carries — numbers that surely make Arkansas coach Bret Bielema angry and envious at the same time.
It wasn’t all great news for A&M, however. Star defensive end Myles Garrett injured his left ankle and limped to the locker room late in the game. Wide receiver Ricky Seals-Jones also suffered a left ankle injury when his ankle twisted awkwardly while blocking for a scrambling Knight.

Arkansas’ Allen was beat up too. The Aggie defensive front tormented him and the quarterback was clearly playing in pain through the second half after taking a huge hit in the first.
We’ll find out a lot more about Texas A&M over the next four weeks too. The Aggies travel to South Carolina in Week 5 before taking on division leaders Tennessee and Alabama. A 2-1 stretch — especially if it includes an Alabama win — makes A&M a legitimate playoff contender.
Arkansas’ season isn’t toast either. It’s now in a tie with Ole Miss, Auburn and LSU in the West and Alabama comes visiting on Oct. 8. The SEC West madness may be just beginning.
