Tennessee filled its offensive coordinator vacancy with someone already on staff.

The school said Friday it had promoted tight ends coach and special teams coordinator Larry Scott to coordinator. Former Utah State assistant Mike Canales will be the team’s quarterbacks coach.

“Larry played an important role in the success we had offensively last year and was heavily involved in all aspects of our game plan, both during the week and on game day,” Tennessee coach Butch Jones said in a statement. “We felt it was vital to maintain our continuity on offense and keep building on what we have established the past four seasons.”

Scott replaces Mike DeBord, who left the school in January to be the offensive coordinator at Indiana. DeBord will be an assistant under new coach Tom Allen, who was promoted to replace Kevin Wilson after Wilson resigned from the Hoosiers.

Scott was Tennessee’s tight ends coach for one season after coming over from Miami where he was the interim coach for the Hurricanes in the final half of 2015 after Al Golden was fired.

He inherits an offense that will be replacing a lot of key parts in 2017. Quarterback Josh Dobbs graduated, while running back Alvin Kamara is off to the NFL along with leading receiver Josh Malone. Oh, and running back Jalen Hurd transferred during the 2016 season.

Sophomore running back John Kelly, who had 630 yards and averaged 6.4 yards a carry is Tennessee’s leading returning rusher.

Tennessee also said defensive backs coach Charlton Warren will take over Scott’s duties as special teams coordinator.
