Teens’ reaction to classic song is proof of how timeless Phil Collins is

Two Indiana teenagers recently had an unforgettable reaction to a classic song by English songwriter Phil Collins.

On July 27, brothers Tim and Fred Williams, both of whom hail from Gary, took to their YouTube channel TwinsthenewTrend to share their reactions to Collins’ 1981 hit “In the Air Tonight.” The two have amassed more than 518,000 followers with their videos, most of which document their reactions to memorable songs such as Bon Jovi’s “Livin’ On a Prayer” and Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together.”

In the nearly eight-minute video, the brothers are seen calmly nodding their heads to the track’s opening sequence, which consists of a basic drum machine pattern.

“Sound like a — shoot — a ring entrance or something,” Tim quips.

As the chords enter, Tim gets excited, saying, “Okay, hold up. Sound like they finna go cray!”

“It looks like he’s staring into my soul,” Fred jokes, referencing Collins’ album cover. “I can’t look at him.”

When Collins starts singing the first line of the song, Tim pauses the track for a second.

“He said, ‘Hold on.’ Hold on, hold on, hold on,” Tim hilariously says. “Phil Collins, man. Man, let me put on a seatbelt real quick, man. Hold up.”

The two brothers then settle themselves in their seats, in an effort to prepare themselves for what’s to come. As the song continues, it becomes clear that twins are clearly enjoying the vocals and the ominous keyboard sounds.

Tim pauses the music again to make an observation.

“This is like a WWE entrance,” he says. “I can see somebody walking down to the ring to this, bro.”

But perhaps the best part of the video takes place when the song’s legendary drum break occurs. With his jaw dropped, Tim immediately looks at Fred as if he’s in shock.

“I ain’t never seen nobody drop a beat three minutes in a song,” Fred says.

By the end of the song, both Tim and Fred can agree on one thing: Collins “killed” that song (in a good way, obviously). Fred then proceeds to add “In the Air Tonight” to his playlist.

The twins’ video has since received 6.5 million views, along with thousands of comments from YouTube users who agreed that Collins’ single was worth all the praise the brothers had given.

“The 80’s sound will never be replaced,” one person simply wrote.

“Gentlemen, thank you for recording your initial reaction to Phil Collins’ ‘In the Air Tonight,'” another added. “You brought me back to when I first heard it when it first came out. Phil changed how music would sound for the 80s. But, your reaction is great and for you to give us something to enjoy during this time is a gift to us all. Thank you and keep doing what you are doing!”

Many consider “In the Air Tonight” Collins’ signature song, which was ranked the 35th best song of the 1980s by VH1. In a 2016 interview with television host Jimmy Fallon, the singer revealed that he wrote it amidst a divorce he was going through.

“I was angry … well, you know, you go through a divorce and, you know, sometimes, it’s like, ‘Please, I love you, I love you, I love you. Don’t hang up, don’t hang up,'” Collins said. “And it’s like, ‘Well, [mouths expletive] you.’ And that’s, of course, when a song like ‘In the Air Tonight’ comes out. There was obviously a lot of anger in there.”
