Team-First Football the Key for Blue Bombers

The Blue Bombers were positively jovial in the locker room following Friday night’s matchup with the Argonauts, and rightfully so. Winnipeg eclipsed the .500 mark after Friday night’s win, completing a home-and-home matchup against Toronto which saw the Bombers outscore their opponents by a combined 78-34.

When asked what he liked most about the effort and results from the back-to-back matchups, QB Matt Nichols was quick to respond.

“Everything, honestly” he said. “Going into this back-to-back… you want to go into the bye week feeling good about where you’re at as a team and I feel like we’re hitting our stride.”

A common theme among the Bombers interviewees was their preference to defer credit to their teammates, even when it didn’t show up on the scoresheet.

LB Jovan Santos-Knox recorded a career-best three sacks in the win, but when asked to summarize his game, was eager to spread the love to the players he feels allowed him to find success.

“I have one of the best linebackers in the league beside me, I’m learning every day from that guy,” said Knox of teammate Adam Bighill. “And shoutout to the D-line, everything I do is a compliment to them. It’s so much fun playing behind those guys.”

Nichols was especially complimentary to receiver Darvin Adams, who recorded just two catches for eight yards , but laid an instrumental block on Drew Wolitarsky‘s touchdown.

“Darvin is a team first guy,” said Nichols. “He loves seeing his teammate get into the end zone and being the one that made the block for it. I told him that touchdown was as much his as it was [Wolitarsky’s].”

“The coaches and the front office have filled this room with a bunch of unselfish people,” Nichols continued. “Everyone in the room is excited for the other guy making plays.”
